Heart Surgery at Sentara

Dr. Barreiro is the surgical director of the Sentara Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program. He specializes in coronary artery bypass surgery, valvular heart disease, surgeries of the thoracic aorta, as well as heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. He is also experienced in performing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) procedures. Dr. Barreiro is a certified member of the American Board of Surgery and of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is also a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

Originally from New York, Dr. Barreiro is a die-hard New York Yankees fan. He and his wife, Jo-Ann, have four sons and live in Virginia Beach. Dr. Barreiro enjoys running, traveling with his family and coaching his sons in youth baseball.

Dr. Kemp is board certified in general surgery and thoracic surgery and has been named a “Top Doctor” by Coastal Virginia Magazine. He specializes in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement, transcatheter valve replacement (TAVR/TMVR), aortic aneurysm repair, heart failure, mechanical circulatory support (LVAD/ECMO) and heart transplantation. He also specializes in general and oncologic thoracic surgery.

In his free time, Dr. Kemp and his wife Jean, a dermatopathologist in the US Navy, enjoy spending time with their two children and trips down to the Outer Banks, where Dr. Kemp has spent time growing up

Dr. Klena is an experienced cardiothoracic surgeon who works closely with the pulmonary, oncology and radiology teams to provide a multidisciplinary approach to thoracic surgery. His clinical interests include, thoracic oncology, including multi-disciplinary therapy for lung cancer and robotic lung resection, and evolving technologies for cardiac revascularization. When he is not caring for his patients, Dr. Klena enjoys sailing with his wife, fly-fishing and upland bird hunting with his Ryman Setter, Chester. He and his wife have four adult children, including two in the Marine Corps, and one grandchild, so they enjoy traveling to spend time with them.

Dr. Newton is the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and a founding member of the Structural Heart Team at Sentara. He specializes in coronary artery bypass and all forms of open valve surgery, as well as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), less invasive and catheter based mitral surgeries, aortic surgery and atrial fibrillation procedures. He led the effort to develop the first multidisciplinary thoracic (lung) program in the region and the Sentara lung cancer screening program. He performs video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomies for lung cancer and other complex thoracic procedures.

Personally, Dr. Newton enjoys spending quality time with his five children, getting involved with his local community and living by the ocean. He has been named a Top Doc by Hampton Roads Magazine.

Dr. Unger is a highly trained and experienced cardiothoracic surgeon with clinical interests in heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, heart transplantation, valvular heart disease, coronary artery revascularization and aortic surgery. His research interests focus on preservation techniques in transplantation and he has authored several scientific publications. During his general surgery training, he was presented with the Dmitriy A. Nikitin, M.D., Resident Excellence Award. He later received the Coleman Connolly Award in Thoracic Surgery for mentoring, teaching and fostering a desire to learn.

Dr. Unger was born and raised in Norfolk and currently resides there with his wife and son. When he is not caring for patients, he enjoys running, history, art and spending time with his family.
